App Store and Google Play preview video specs (2026)
What are the App Store preview video requirements?
Apple accepts app previews of 15 to 30 seconds, up to three per localization, H.264 or ProRes 422 HQ, 30fps maximum, under 500MB, and stereo audio is required. Google Play is different in every respect: 30 to 120 seconds, hosted on YouTube, linked by full URL, monetization off.
Apple: the numbers that get you rejected
| Requirement | Value |
|---|---|
| Length | 15–30 seconds. Hard limits, both ends. |
| Previews per localization | Up to 3 |
| Format | H.264, or ProRes 422 (HQ only) |
| File extensions | .mov, .m4v, .mp4 for H.264 · .mov for ProRes |
| Maximum file size | 500 MB |
| Frame rate | 30 fps maximum |
| H.264 bit rate | 10–12 Mbps target, progressive, up to High Profile Level 4.0 |
| ProRes 422 HQ bit rate | VBR, around 220 Mbps |
| Audio | Stereo required. 256 kbps AAC, or PCM for ProRes |
| Sample rate | 44.1 kHz or 48 kHz |
| Audio track layout | 1 track of 2-channel stereo, or 2 tracks of 1-channel. All tracks enabled. |
| Default poster frame | 5 seconds in |
The stereo audio requirement catches more people than the length limit. A silent screen recording exported straight out of a capture tool has no audio track at all, and App Store Connect will refuse it.
Apple: accepted resolutions
| Device | Portrait | Landscape |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 6.9" · 6.5" · 6.1" | 886 x 1920 | 1920 x 886 |
| iPhone 5.5" | 1080 x 1920 | 1920 x 1080 |
| iPhone 4.7" | 750 x 1334 | 1334 x 750 |
| iPhone 4" | 1080 x 1920 | 1920 x 1080 |
| iPad 13" · 11" · 10.5" | 1200 x 1600 | 1600 x 1200 |
| iPad 9.7" | 900 x 1200 | 1200 x 900 |
| Mac and Apple TV | n/a | 1920 x 1080 only |
| Apple Vision Pro | n/a | 3840 x 2160 only |
- iOS and iPadOS accept portrait or landscape.
- macOS and tvOS are landscape only.
- The poster frame defaults to five seconds in, so whatever is on screen at 0:05 is your thumbnail. Choose it deliberately.
Google Play: a completely different product
| Requirement | Value |
|---|---|
| Length | 30–120 seconds |
| Hosting | YouTube. You link it, you do not upload it. |
| URL format | Full YouTube video link. Not a shortened link, not a playlist, not a channel. |
| Videos per listing | Up to 3 |
| Visibility | Public or unlisted. Private will not resolve. |
| Monetization | Must be off, or the listing shows ads |
| Also required | A feature graphic, or the video will not display at all |
The practical consequence: one file will not serve both stores. An Apple preview is 15 to 30 seconds of the app in use at 886 x 1920. A Play promo is 30 to 120 seconds on YouTube, usually 16:9, and can be a straightforward marketing video. Plan two edits, or plan a 30-second cut that satisfies Apple and a longer one for Play.
The checklist before you upload
- Length between 15 and 30 seconds for Apple. Check the trailing frames. A 30.4-second export fails.
- Audio track present and stereo. Add music if the recording is silent.
- Resolution matches Apple's table exactly for the device size you are submitting.
- Under 500 MB, 30 fps or lower.
- The frame at five seconds works as a still, because it is your poster.
- The video shows the app in use. Apple's guidelines cover what is on screen, so a brand film will not pass.
- For Play: YouTube video is public or unlisted, monetization off, full URL, feature graphic uploaded.

How long can an App Store preview video be?
15 to 30 seconds. Apple treats both ends as hard limits, so a 14-second or 31-second file is rejected. You can upload up to three previews per localization.
What resolution should an App Store preview video be?
886 x 1920 portrait for current iPhone displays at 6.9, 6.5 and 6.1 inches. Older sizes differ: 1080 x 1920 for 5.5-inch and 4-inch, 750 x 1334 for 4.7-inch. iPad is 1200 x 1600 portrait, or 900 x 1200 for the 9.7-inch. Mac and Apple TV are 1920 x 1080, landscape only.
Does an App Store preview video need audio?
Yes. Apple requires a stereo audio track at 44.1 or 48 kHz, encoded as 256 kbps AAC or PCM for ProRes, as either one 2-channel track or two 1-channel tracks, with all tracks enabled. A silent screen recording with no audio track will be rejected.
Can I use the same video on the App Store and Google Play?
Not the same file. Apple wants a 15 to 30 second video uploaded to App Store Connect at its specified resolutions. Google Play wants a 30 to 120 second video hosted on YouTube and linked by full URL, with monetization turned off. At best you cut a 30-second version that satisfies Apple and a longer one for Play.
How many preview videos can I upload?
Apple allows up to three app previews per localization. Google Play allows up to three preview videos per store listing, each a YouTube link.
What is the poster frame in an App Store preview?
The still shown before the video plays. Apple defaults it to five seconds into the video, so whatever appears at 0:05 becomes your thumbnail unless you change it in App Store Connect. It is worth designing that frame rather than inheriting it.
