9 app video tools with no subscription (2026)

Is there an app video tool without a subscription?

Nine tools let you make an app video without a recurring charge: pay once, pay per video, or pay nothing. SmoothCapture is $99 forever, Screenhance is $6 for ten exports, Mega Pudu's first video is free. Everything else in this category bills monthly, and Screen Studio dropped its lifetime licence in 2026.

Why this list keeps getting shorter

One-time pricing is disappearing from this category. Screen Studio sold a lifetime licence between $89 and $229 and has discontinued it in favour of $29 a month. Arcade's Growth plan moved from $42.50 per user to $297.50 a month flat. The tools below are what is left, plus the ones that never charged rent in the first place.

Three shapes work if you refuse a subscription: buy the software once, buy credits that do not expire, or use a free tier that gives you a clean file instead of a watermarked one.

The nine

  1. Best for: App Store previews, bought once, kept forever

    Price
$99 one-time, up to three Macs, updates included, 30-day refund
    Free tier
    No free tier

Records your app, wraps it in a 3D device frame, exports the formats App Store Connect accepts. The best straight swap for a Screen Studio subscription if you are on a Mac and want the payment to end.

    • One payment covers three Macs
    • Exports Apple-accepted preview formats directly
    • Auto-zoom and cursor effects included
    • macOS only
    • No trial before you buy
    • You need a working build to record
  2. Best for: A vertical clip with nothing to cancel

    Price
First video free. Credits after that: $9 for 100, $29 for 400. They do not expire.
    Free tier
One full video, clean download, no watermark

Credits sit on the account until you spend them, so a launch week costs you a launch week. Describe the app, get a ~12 second vertical clip, edit it in chat. No footage required.

    • Credits never expire
    • Nothing renews and there is no plan to cancel
    • First video is free and downloads clean
    • ~12s vertical only
    • Will not record your real app flow
    • New, so no template library
  3. Best for: The cheapest one-time exit from a watermark

    Price
$6 Launch Pass for 10 watermark-free exports. Pro is $12/mo if you want it.
    Free tier
    3 exports a month, watermarked

Framed, animated mockups from screenshots, in a browser. Six dollars is the lowest price on this page for a clean file, and there is no card left on file afterwards.

    • $6 and you are done
    • No install
    • Free tier is enough to evaluate first
    • Ten exports on the pass
    • More screenshot tool than video tool
    • Watermark on the free tier
  4. Best for: 3D device mockups without rent

    Price
One-time payment across three tiers, with 6 to 12 months of updates. Rotato does not print the price on its pricing page; third-party trackers put it around $59 to $99.
    Free tier
    No free tier listed

The mockups look expensive and the payment happens once. Rotato states plainly that there are no monthly or yearly fees, which is rare enough in 2026 to be the main reason it is here.

    • No recurring fee, stated outright
    • Large device library
    • Renders look genuinely premium
    • macOS only
    • Price is not published
    • Updates stop after 6 to 12 months unless you re-buy
  5. Best for: Free, exact, already installed

    Price
    Free with Xcode
    Free tier
    Everything

The Simulator records video at exact App Store dimensions, which is the single hardest part of a compliant preview. Add music in any editor and you have a legal file for nothing. Unglamorous and completely free.

    • Pixel dimensions match Apple's spec exactly
    • No watermark, no account, no cost
    • Already on your machine
    • macOS and Xcode required
    • No polish, zooms or transitions
    • You must add an audio track separately or Apple rejects it
  6. Best for: Free editing with no export limit

    Price
Free tier is genuinely usable. Pro exists but is not required.
    Free tier
Full editor. Plain exports carry no watermark.

A real editor that does not charge you to export. Plain manual exports are clean. Watermarks only appear if you leave a Pro-locked template or effect in the project, or leave the default outro on, so turn off Add ending before you export.

    • Plain exports are watermark-free on the free plan
    • Every caption and transition style you have seen
    • Runs on phone, desktop and web
    • You do the work
    • Nothing app-specific
    • Pro templates and effects stamp the export
  7. Best for: A professional editor you never pay for

    Price
Free. The Studio upgrade is a one-time $295 and you almost certainly do not need it.
    Free tier
    The whole editor

The most capable free video software that exists. Wrong tool for a twelve-second app clip, right tool if you are making something real and refuse to rent Adobe.

    • Free forever, no watermark, no export cap
    • Genuinely professional grading and audio
    • One-time upgrade if you ever need it
    • Steep learning curve
    • Heavy install
    • Overkill for a store preview
  8. Best for: One month, then cancel

    Price
    $29/mo, or $15/mo billed annually
    Free tier
Free plan with limits and branding

A subscription, listed because a single month at $29 produces a full store listing and then you leave. That is a one-time cost in practice, as long as you remember to cancel.

    • One month covers a launch
    • Screenshots and video in one place
    • Store presets done for you
    • It is a subscription, so you must cancel it
    • Dated editor
    • Branding on the free plan
  9. Best for: Paying a person once

    Price
Entry gigs commonly start under $50. Complex work runs into the hundreds.
    Free tier
    None

The original no-subscription option. You pay for a deliverable and nothing recurs. Slower than every tool on this page, and quality swings hard between sellers, but the transaction genuinely ends.

    • Pay per video, nothing renews
    • Someone else does the work
    • Cheaper than any agency
    • 3 to 10 day turnaround
    • Quality varies
    • Revisions usually cost extra

The tools that used to be here

  • Screen Studio sold a lifetime licence at $89 to $229. It is now $29/mo or $108/yr.
  • Arcade moved its Growth plan from $42.50 per user to $297.50 a month flat for five seats.
  • Creatify's free credits expire after two months, so the free tier resets rather than accumulates.
  • Previewed meters every export, including the re-export after you spot a typo, so a monthly plan is effectively required for iteration.

No plan, no renewal, no card for the first one.

Questions people ask

Is there an app video maker with no subscription?

Yes. SmoothCapture is $99 once for up to three Macs. Rotato is a one-time payment. Screenhance sells a $6 pass for ten clean exports. Mega Pudu gives the first video free and then sells credits that do not expire. CapCut, DaVinci Resolve and Apple's iOS Simulator are free outright.

What is the cheapest one-time app video tool?

Free, if you use Apple's iOS Simulator to record at exact App Store dimensions and add music in CapCut. Of the paid one-time options, Screenhance's $6 Launch Pass is cheapest, then Rotato at roughly $59 to $99, then SmoothCapture at $99.

Did Screen Studio stop selling a lifetime licence?

Yes. Screen Studio previously sold one-time licences between $89 and $229 and has discontinued them. As of July 2026 it is $29 a month or $108 a year. SmoothCapture at $99 once is the closest one-time replacement on macOS.

Can I make an App Store preview video for free?

Yes. The iOS Simulator bundled with Xcode records at Apple's exact required dimensions, which removes the hardest compliance problem. Add a stereo audio track in any free editor, because Apple rejects previews with no audio, and the total cost is zero.

Do credits that never expire beat a subscription?

For bursty use, yes. App video demand spikes at launch and goes quiet afterwards, so a monthly plan charges you for the quiet months. Credits that persist mean the launch week costs you a launch week. Watch for expiry rules: Creatify's free credits lapse after two months.
